Barren planets are rocky, ore-rich planets that are very easy to traverse and inhabit. They are rewarding to explore due to their abundance of ore. Making a base on a Barren planet is good idea due to their ores and flatness. Barren planets are the only planets that have Beryllium, making them useful for making warheads.
Some Barren planets may not have air, so you might need to use an airsupply to explore or setup a base there (Although all ships that explore space have an air supply, so this is typically not a problem).
BUT an issue with Barren planets is that if there is air, it will constantly make an annoying wind sound.
